Above Them – Are We A Danger To Ourselves? (2012 – Kiss Of Death/YoYo/Specialist Subject) - Review by Paul Edwards
Pontefract’s finest have finally brought out a follow up to their blinding debut “Blueprint for a Better Time”. Combining gruff punk influences with the sounds of early noughties post hardcore bands such as Hundred Reasons & Hell Is For Heroes they given us what I can only describe as the perfect follow up.
As a whole the record gives you everything you could want from a melodic punk record. Standout tracks such as the albums opener ‘The New Year’, the already heavily gigged ‘Temper Like A Hand Grenade’ and ‘The Fall’ had me inadvertently holding my fist in the air only to realise that I was in my room sat in front of my laptop being watched by three confused rats rather than at an actual show. ‘Giving Up On Sorrow’ is the one track on the record that really reminds me of the band’s debut record whereas ‘On Form Like A Bad Year’ and the album’s title track show us just how far this band have come in the last few years.
“Are We A Danger To Ourselves?” is a loud fast melodic masterpiece showcasing exactly what Above Them are about, driving guitars combined with singer Oli Wood’s distinct croon coupled with the song writing style we have all come to love. Difficult second album this is not, in fact I’d go as far as to say this could be the record to seriously get Above Them noticed. A serious contender for album of the year. Do yourself a favour and check it out.
Sixties record sleeve/blue note inspired design for the new Cats? Aye! records release.
We’ve always been lucky with people going out of their way for us and the truth is most people only hear about us through word of mouth. That being said, our new L.P “Midnight mass” is nearly upon us! If you dig our band, we would really appreciate you reposting this for us. Get stoked.
